The Country of the Center Brittany - Theme of linen

The theme of linen and weaving constitutes a period of History of the Center Brittany. From the culture of linen to the export of goods, this common heritage was the object of initiatives of preservation and development for several years.

The municipality of Saint Thélo, partner of a project concerning the promotion of this historic heritage, inaugurated in June, 2004 “La Maison des Toiles”, museum relating the history of linen. This museum generates a dynamic around this theme of linen.

This project evolved with LEADER program. The coming of the Japanese artist Tadashi KAWAMATA aimed to emphasize and preserve the architectural heritage stemming from this period. His work called “Mémoire en Demeure” (" Memory in house ") make three weavers' houses live again. Furthermore, the organization of artist's residence allows to welcome populations (artists, French and foreign students) and gives to this project an international opening.

The project of transnational cooperation is a mean to preserve, promote and value the heritage of the linen.
